Sighisoara is a city unique in Romania and in the South-Eastern Europe through being a medieval city inhabited by people of today. This UNESCO Patrimony site was colonized by the Transylvanian Saxons around the 12th century; the city (also called “The Pearl of Transylvania”) is built on the site of a Daco-Roman settlement from the 4th-7th centuries. Mentioned as Castrum Sex in 1280, Sighisoara turned into a great center of craftsmanship in the 14th century. Although it has had a turbulent history, the city has managed to preserve its medieval charm until the present day.

Day 1, Friday

Cluj-Napoca – Sighisoara

Arrival at the international airport in Cluj-Napoca. Departure to Sighisoara. Dinner and overnight in a 4* hotel in the medieval city center.

Day 2, Saturday

Sighisoara – Cluj-Napoca

City Hall (Dealu Cetatii) is the medieval city’s center. The narrow streets with massive colorful houses are protected by a defense wall with 14 towers displayed in the most strategic points. The most representatives are: The Ropers’, Butchers’, Tailors’ and Shoemakers’ Towers. The central attraction is the Fortress Tower (Turnul Cetatii), built in Baroque style in the 14th century, equipped with 4 little towers and a little wooden passage for guards. The clock was installed in 1648 and its mechanism includes groups of colored wooden figurines that stand for the days of the week.

The covered stairs built in 1656 with 165 stairs lead to the Church from the Hill, a Gothic hall-like structure rising above a Roman crypt. Inside the church there are old paintings from the 15th century, a painted altar and furniture in the Renaissance style. The Monastery Church was built by the Dominican monks in shape of a gothic hall in the 13th century and also a painted shrine and a series of tombstones from the 17th century. Some interesting houses are The Deer House, The Venetian House, and the House of Vlad Dracul (where the famous prince Vlad Tepes was born in 1431).

Every year, in the last week-end of July, there is the Medieval Festival, when numerous art, music and dance festivals take place mostly in the medieval part of Sighisoara.

Return to Cluj-Napoca for dinner and overnight in a 4* hotel.
